My Back Went Out 4 Weeks Ago And I'm Getting

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Oct 2018
Question: My back went out 4 weeks ago and I'm getting treatment from a Chiropractor. My re-eval went well, my back is doing well. (bulging disk)
But my right knee is very painful, especially around the outside on the front. I made an appt with an ortho dr, but can't get in until Oct 9th.
What can I do in the meantime? It's very painful. Dr said I can swim and do light back exercises, but my right knee hurts very badly.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
acute inflammation of the knee. swimming not advisable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* The severe pain around knee indicate acute inflammation of the part.

* My recommendations at present

- Alternate application of ice pack and heating pad 3-4 times a day.
- Consumption of analgesic with anti inflammatory action as aleve or else if no history of
drug sensitivity ( preferably consumed after meals with antacid ).
- Local application of analgesic spray or ointment gives additional relief.

- Keep blood sugar under control.
- Avoid all actions which require extensive use of knee as running, swimming and so
forth which can aggravate the issue ( I do not mean here to remain bed ridden, but
restriction of particular activities only ).

* These steps will give you best possible relief till you consult your ortho specialist to
rule out arthritis or other issue of the knee.

Wish you fine recovery.
Do not hesitate to ask any further doubts.

Thanks.

Doctor,
Thank you. Will the soft knee brace be of help,
or will it cause more problems on my shift due to swelling? I do need to stand intermittently while doing nursing for my pediatric home health patients.

Brief Answer:
brace is not recommended.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome for the follow up.

As per my clinical experience, a brace will cause more internal damage.
Instead you can use safely a warm elastocrepe bandage without much pressure fitting.

Wish you fine health.
Take care.
