Question : My child is seven years old with severe food allergies, can you please evaluate the difference between SoCal Institute and regular OIT therapy? SoCal does TIP and other places do OIT. It is not clear from the SoCal Institute website how different they are from OIT. Thank you

SoCal = Southern California Institute. Dr. Randhava.

Thanks alot.

Brief Answer:
The dose is high in SoCal protocol.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
As far as I know, the main difference is highest dose of allergen.
In OIT guidelines, very less higher dose is given. For example for peanut allergy, 1 peanut (40mg) highest dose is given.
While in SoCal guidelines, upto 400mg (8-10)peanuts daily or thrice weekly given.
Apart from this, SoCal protocol allows routine food along with allergen while in routine OIT, patient needs to follow strict dietary advice.
It will be of great help if you can send me any literature about SoCal protocol given by SoCal so that I can give you exact differences.
Do you have any?
Or any link?
I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your son. Thanks.
