My Dad Had CABG X 3 May 2018. His EF
Question: My dad had CABG x 3 May 2018. His EF was 15% at the time. His surgeon said that he had had a MI at some point. My dad was very active and everyone including his surgeon was surprised that he had complete blockage in 2 arteries and 90% in the other. My dad just had another echo performed (5 months after his surgery) and his cardiologist said his EF was 30% and wanted my dad to get a defibrillator. My dad talked to his surgeon and said EF can change minute to minute, day to day and he recommended waiting until a year after surgery before getting a defibrillator. It’s only been 5 months since his surgery is it too early to decide whether he needs one? Also, how long does it take for EF to go up?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
I passed carefully through your question and would explain that after such period of time, the possibilities for the EF to raise are really scarse.
For this reason, I don't think that it is early for the defibrillator.
Coming to this point, I would recommend discussing again with his doctor on the possibility of implanting the defibrillator, as it will help protect his heart.
