Question: My daughter who is 2.3 year old has some pain in her right leg foot area. Looks like she has twisted her leg while playing. She didn't cry after that incident. She is now lumping while walking from few days. But don't complain about the pain and cry. Kindly suggest the medication to use for this condition and also can we put the pain killer ointment to the foot area?

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concern. However, I would insist you to get an X Ray of the right foot and ankle (AP and lat) done. There can be a ligament sprain involved and application of crepe bandage might be needed. A clinical examination would be helpful and I would appreciate if you get her examined by a local doctor.

Regarding pain medication, I would insist on giving Paracetamol. Let me know the body weight and I will let you know the appropriate dose. I do not suppose that application of pain ointments would help but hot compress alternating with cold compress should provide relief.

Feel free to write back.

Thanks for the response.

It mostly looks like a sprain to me. There is no swelling as well. Do I really need to get a X-Ray for this?

Her weight is 14.5 kg. Is there any alternative we can try for few days and then consult a doctor?

Brief Answer:
Compression bandage can help.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, possibly it is nothing other than a sprain. In that case nothing will show up on X ray. Nevertheless, a fracture possibly needs to be ruled out. A clinical examination could offer valuable clues.

Alternatively, application of crepe bandage/compression bandage can help. On the other hand, hot compress alternating with cold compress should provide relief.

Ok. Should I consult a orthopaedic or a paediatrician or orthopaedic paediatrician for examination?

Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Orthopaedics specialty

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Consulting an Orthopedician should be fine. We would not usually get an orthopedic pediatrician as there is a limited number of doctors in this sub-specialty.

I have consulted the Orthopaedic doctor and he didn't find anything serious after examining her leg. He said no need for X-Ray. He also told kids tend to remember the pain and just leave it as it is and don't apply any medicine so that she forget it.

He suggested to give below medicine only if needed. Prescription is attached for your reference.

1. Syrup mol
2. Syrup ossopan

We have not started this medication yet.

But my daughter is still limping today and what would you suggest us to do please?

Brief Answer:
Your doctor is thinking on the right lines

Detailed Answer:
Your orthopaedic doctor is thinking on the right line and I tend to agree with him. You need not get concerned with the limp.

Thank you for your response.

Should we start the medication or just wait and see for few days? Please advise.

If yes, please suggest the quantity in ml as he just mentioned about teaspoon. She is around 14.5 kg.
