My Husband Has Been Suffering From Osmf Since 4 Years.

There is no cause for worry.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. OSMF (Oral Sub-Mucous Fibrosis) is best managed by stopping areca nut, betel nut, tobacco or gutkha use. Rarely it can be due to other factors such as auto-immune factors, eating very spicy food and so on.
2. The sub-mucous fibrosis is irreversible.
3. Some relief in moth opening can be achieved by injecting Kenacort (triamcinolone) in the retro-molar trigone area once a week for 6-8 weeks. Use of a local anaesthetic spray before injecting this steroid helps avoid discomfort and pain while injecting.
4. Though OSMF is considered premalignant, regular careful observation and examination is all that is required if the above-mentioned is done. It is then unlikely to progress to a cancer.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.
Regards.

My husband has quit the habit and do not take spicy food. So if progression slow down how much years it take to convert into oral cancer ?
Very unlikely.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for following up.
1. If he is taking all precautions, the OSMF is highly unlikely to progress to a cancerous stage.
2. However, regular observation and examination is advised at 3 to 6 monthly intervals for at least 10 years after stopping the offending agent/s and habits.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
