Question: My husband is 63 years old. Mild hypertension. S/P Total Prostatectomy 10 years ago for Cancer. All cancer removed . Negative PSA. Today, I took him to ER for pain in calf x 3 days and swollen ankle on same leg. Ultrasound performed. DVT of left calf. Loading dose of Elaquis given. Stopped ASA yesterday. Is now experiencing bloody urine, painless. I called ER. They said force fluids. Didn’t feel it could happen from Elaquis this early. Never had bloody urine before! Appt. with GP on Monday. I am frightened by this bloody urine. At what point do I take him back to ER?
Brief Answer:
Hematuria is due to side effect of Elaquis (Apixaban)
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .
Based on the facts that you have posted blood in urine (Hematuria) that your husband is getting after taking Elaquis for DVT is due to side effect of Elaquis.
If the color of urine is dark red and if is blood pressure drops down you need to visit ER and change the anticoagulant drug.
You can reduce the dose of Elaquis to 2.5 mg twice daily for few days and observe for any improvement .
Ensure he drinks more water to avoid clot formation in bladder
Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions,I shall be happy to help you
