Question : My husband woke up asking for antacids (possibly the first time in our whole marriage) at 0330 this morning. After breakfast he mentioned his fitbit showed an extreme increase in his heart rate (150bpm) for 17 minutes sometime after midnight! He carries some extra weight but maintains the military fitness standards (usually exceeds). Should I make him go to the doctor? ER? He has a follow up for a knee surgery on Friday-will that be ok to wait until then? He has no recollection of chest, arm or other kinds of pain-just nausea.

                                    Brief Answer:
Isolated episode, can wait until Friday
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
Waking up for antiacids at night can be related to hyperacidity, possibly gastritis. The pain he felt during this episode may have increased the heart rate.
Another possibility is that the pain he was feeling was not related to stomach but possibly heart discomfort caused by tachycardia. If this is a single episode with normal heart rate for the rest of time there is no need to go to ER. He can use half of atenolol in this case.
He can wait until Friday to meet his doctor.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
