Question: My mom is 77. Very active and healthy (no health problems for several years). She had a stroke 7 years ago but had no effects from it. At that time they found a 3mm anerysm incidentally on a scan that they did not seem concerned about. She takes Plavix and Aspirin and is on Synthroid for hyperthyroidism. Until 2 weeks ago she was the caregiver for her 99 year old mother who passed away. Because she was busy with that she failed to get her covid booster, but she did have the 2 dose Moderna last March. Today she test posiitive for covid with a very faint line. They only symptoms she has at this time is a scratchy throat. My questions are 1. Will the Moderna vaccine she got still protect her from serious disease. 2. Is Omicron still considered a vascular threat...does the fact that she has a distant stroke history make her a higher risk for severe complications? Is there something she should be taking to be proactive early in the infection, whether it be by prescrption or a supplement? She already takes, D, C, and Zinc. She has been so careful and we are so disappointed she is positive.

Brief Answer:
Vaccination prevents severe illness.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to the "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your question.

1. Until now we know that people vaccinated previously can experience a less severe disease after COVID-19 infection, so, it is possible for your mother to be protected to a certain degree after being vaccinated.

2. Omicron variant may increase brain hemorrhage, but only in cases of severe illness.

3. Besides supplements, is necessary a close follow-up for neurological signs and other parameters such as normal blood pressure, normal levels of blood oxygenation, etc.

In conclusion, since your mother resulted positive and is experiencing minor signs of the disease, chances are to pass this infection without any major health issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.
