Question : My niece is 24 weeks pregnant. She was admitted to the hospital with preeclampsia. Her blood pressure. Was 199/115. The doctors gave her medicine to reduce blood pressure last night. This morning they did blood work and found her platelet count was 113,000. If it had fallen to less than 100,000 they would have done a caesarean and delivered her baby The doctor said she had HELLP Syndrome. . Her platelet count increased to 145,000 which was very unexpected by her doctors. They are planning to deliver the baby within the next five days. We are very worried because the baby is only 24 weeks into its development. My question is why if the mother is stable must the baby be delivered now? What are the chances the baby will survive at such a young age? What long term complications could the baby have? We (her extended family) have had no direct contact with her doctor so we are trying to understand what is happening. Any information will be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Premature complications are explained below in detail.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern.

HELLP syndrome is a complication of pregnancy.

It is characterized by hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and a low platelet count.

Even if your nice is stable the delivery should be done as soon as possible to prevent further complications.

Over half of premature babies born 24 weeks of pregnancy will survive delivery.

But based on the fact that that the organs are underdeveloped the baby can have complications.

Some of the complications can be mental retardation, poor health and growth and visual or hearing impairments.

These are only probabilities based on evidence studies.

So, I suggest to follow up with your gynecologist for a specific evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
