Question : My niece was admitted with preeclampsia last week. The baby has been delivered at 24.3 weeks. The baby is stable at the present time. But my niece is still having uncontrollable high blood pressure and has started to have clonus. I don’t understand what that is. How long does it take for preeclampsia to resolve once the baby is delivered? We, as her extended family, are not able to be with her and cannot talk to her doctors. Any general information you can give about this ongoing condition will be appreciated.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!
Regarding your concern I would explain that this is a serious condition, characterized by high blood pressure and possible seizures.
The clonus could be myoclonus ( maybe you have heard it wrong) which is involuntary muscle twitching.
The main treatment in such cases is magnesium infusion and benzodiazepines, besides the interruption of the pregnancy.
This situation may last for some days, up to a couple of weeks.
Hope you will find this answer helpful!
