Question: My son has had nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea along with pain just below his sternum and yesterday trouble breathing. He was seen by an er physician who suspects the pancreas is involved. He has ordered an US but that can’t be done until next week. Blood work was done today. Waiting on those results. My son can’t keep anything down and is continuing to vomit. He was given Lidicain orally at the hospital and has a prescription to fill. Will this settle dow or should he return

Brief Answer:
Need details to help you better

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query my dear patient.
Have seen your details and I appreciate your concerns.

I can't understand why the doctor initially jumped for a diagnosis like pancreatic cancer. Does the patient has history of any other disease/Health problem from a very long time?
The symptoms you are saying like Nausea,Vomiting and burning below sternum are something highly specific for Gastritis or Acid peptic disorder(Endoscopy has been done).
Have you tried antacids or other medications used to treat gastritis or acid peptic disorder.
The patient looks like having Acid peptic disorder.
I can't understand why consultant jumped directly to pancreatic pathology. Is the child having any pancreatic pathology previously?
Please revert back.

Secondly answer- Relief from lidocaine?
There is no role of lidocaine in pancreatitis but rather it has a role in treating Gastritis/Acid peptic disorder.
What is the duration of illness?
Is this the first episode or multiple episodes history is there?
Medication and their duration tried till date?
And why the doctor jumped to Pancreatic pathology initially? His explanation.

Please revert back.
Thank you and waiting.

there was no mention of Pancreatic Cancer. just that he felt that the vomiting of Bile etc and pain where it is, is suspicious of Pancreatitis. there has been no previous pathology. Ultrasound next tuesday and possibly and endoscope.

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
Reman calm I really don't think the problem has anything to do with pancreas very likely it would turn up to be a acid peptic problem.
Follow up with reports of endoscopy.
For the time being for relief over the counter meds like Zofran 4 mg can be taken for nausea vomiting and Loperamide 2mg twice can be taken for loose motions.
Thank you!
