My Wife Has Had Several Root Canals, At Good Places

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jan 2021
Question: My wife has had several root canals, at good places like Manipal. None have given antibiotics to be taken after the first session. We decided on a less crowded clinic this time due to COvid, and the doctor has asked her to take Augmentin 625 for 5 days 1-0-1. Why is this being asked and what will happen if she does not take it ?

Brief Answer:
It depends on the level of infection in each teeth

Detailed Answer:
Hiii first of all thank you for approaching us with your query. I read through your query. I suggest that nothing to be worried in this case. The prescription of antibiotics depends on the level of infection present at the start of root canal treatment. And also to reduce pain and infection in the next appointments. There is absolutely nothing to be worried. Also do warm salt water gargle. It reduces the infection left in the root. Hope you understood what I meant. Thankyou and have a healthy day. Dr Rohit

Your answer is correct- it depends on the level of infection present. ( I read up an article on this https://www.aae.org/specialty/2016/08/19/antibiotics-a-risky-prescription/ and its not advised unless cellulitis or few other cases are present)

In this case my wife never had any pain. The reason for going for the root canal was that food would get lodged, and taking out the large filling would have exposed the root and refilling was no option.
The point is- no other root canal in the past required this, and she had an acidity problem in the past- it took 1 year to get off Pantodac , and she does not want to revisit that situation again.

Can we just wait till next day to see if pain and inflammation develops and then consider starting augmenting ?

Detailed Answer:
Hiii first of all thank you for your followup query. I read through your query and I must say that yes of course you can wait and see if any pain or inflammation develops and then take augmentin. Since she has gastric problems and no pain the tooth she can wait and take medication.Hope you understood what I meant. Thankyou and have a healthy day. Dr Rohit
