Nausea And Dizziness During A Neck Massage. Cause?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Apr 2013
Question: What could cause brief nausea dizziness during neck massage? I noticed an immediate reaction as one side of neck was massaged. It was transient but never happened before. To clarify, the nausea was not an immediate reaction at onset of massage...After a few minutes of I noticed the reaction during massage.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Neck is the area where Vagus nerve and carotid sinus is located (the lateral part of it). Vagaus nerve goes from the brain across the neck, along the esophagus to the abdominal cavity. Its stimulation causes nausea and vomiting.
Carotid sinus is the area where baroreceptors are located and is responsible for maintaining blood pressure. Carotid sinus massage is used to decrease heart rate and can cause blood pressure drop. Sudden blood pressure drop gives nausea and dizziness.
So there are two possible explanations of such nausea and vomiting appearance and most likely both mechanisms are responsible together for such symptoms.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
