Posted on Fri, 24 Aug 2012
Question: My son just came back from a 7 week camp living in tents with no electricity or running water. He has to circles on his wrist the size of a quarter and white in color. No red ring just a whitish patch the size of a quarter. Any easy diagnosis?

Hello,

Thanks for the question.

In situation like this, I would like to think of local fungal skin infection.

Many antifungal creams can clear the condition in around two weeks. Examples of such preparations include those that contain clotrimazole(Cruex cream, Desenex cream, Lotrimin cream, lotion, and solution), miconazole(Monistat-Derm cream), ketoconazole(Nizoral cream), econazole (Spectazole), naftifine (Naftin), and terbinafine (Lamisil cream and solution). Any one cream can be used.

You can give it a try. Most such rashes clear off in week or two. If it persists then you will have to consider a visit to dermatologist.

Please ask if there are follow up questions.

Regards.
