On Seroquel With Celexa . Suffered Panic Attacks. Fall Asleep Faster With Ambien. Having Anxiety And Feel Frustrated. What To Do?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Oct 2013
Question: I was on seroquel25mg with celexa 20 mg for eight years. they kept me from panic attacks, but in XXXXXXX my doc took me off seroquel so I could fall asleep faster with Ambien 10mg. Now I am having anxiety regularly and am very frustrated. I am losing weight with these panic attacks and wish I could go back to XXXXXXX and forget about Ambien. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
There was no need for that change

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

You have stated thay you were doing good on seroquel and celexa. Seroquel it self is a sedating medication and makes you drowsy given at night. Withdrawing seroquel to make you sleep fast doesnt make any sense.

If ambien had to be added it could be have been added in combination to the already continuing medications.

You should also consider adding Cognitive Behavioural Therapy CBT sessions to your treatment regimes. They are 20 min weekly therapy sessions which will try to alter your though process.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.

If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.

I asked my doctor to prescribe Ambien because the seroquel was not working very fast for SLEEP. She told me If I wanted Ambien, I would have to give up seroquel. So I did and that's when all my anxiety returned. About a month ago, I tried to go back on Seroquel at night and I had a horrible night....hot sweats, restlessness, etc. So I RETURNED TO AMBIEN. You seem to believe taking both is possible.

I just made an appt. with a therapist because my psychiatrist would not take me back after I stopped seeing him seven years ago. I XXXXXXX 't know if she is certified to administer meds. But I need answers fast. Thank you for your enlightening answer.

Brief Answer:
yes they can be taken together

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Ambien and Seroquel can be taken together. The only problem it can cause is excess sedation but that may wary from person to person. It may not be so in your case. When you took seroquel the sweating you had was probably a withdrawal from ambien.
Hope thay helps

Wow.....I never thought of that nor did my Internist. I knew Ambien was addictive, but at my age, it isn't a bad thing. I'm afraid to take Ambien and Seroquel together. Would it be a good idea to stop Ambien for a couple nights (sleepless nights for sure) and then resume Seroquel? Or should I start slowly on Seroquel (The one I took is only 25mg but it helped me so much for eight years)

Now, I am very nervous about having withdrawal symptoms if I stop taking Ambien. Do you know how long it will last?

Thank you so much,

Dear Dr XXXXXXX

You have been very patient with me and I am thankful with your good responses. I see my therapist (Holistic ph.d in Psychology) this afternoon. She does not prescribe drugs and I think she will just give me just techniques to overcome my anxiety. My question to to you: I am considering taking charge of the situation and taking an Ambien 5mg and a seroquel25 mg (half dose) tonight. I plan to tell her that I am miserable with serious anxiety and that as a temporary measure, I want to do this. Do you think this is a good idea? Or, will she then drop me as her patient?

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

I saw my therapist yesterday and was a nervous wreck all day anticipating the event. I wasn't sure I could sit there with her for a whole hour. Luckily, she was very kind and hugged me as I tried to talk. we finally went outside to talk because I didn't like to sit in her enclosed quarters. Yes, she thought I had a severe case of anxiety and no, she would not prescribe any meds. We did a few sessions of "tapping" and then breathing. She told me to do these exercises at home any time...or, before and during a panic attack. I am not confident that they work.

I asked her if......as a temporary measure, I could take Ambien 5 and Seroquel 25 at night for sleep. At first, she said she would worry about that sedative combination. Then I told her that I heard this from a doctor online. Then she said.....well, maybe you could try that. This PhD., DCEP does not know much about drugs and would never prescribed them.

I have an appointment with her next Monday, but am thinking of canceling it as I don't seem to be able to keep up with holistic treatments.

My urine culture came back yesterday and tested positive AGAIN after only a month. My doctor put me on Bactrim and hope I don't have side effects. Last time I took Bactrim I interpreted hot and cold sweats as a side effect. Now, I think it may have been a panic attack. I am a wreck!

do you have any ideas for me?

Brief Answer:
you should continue your therapy

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the follow up query.
I would suggest that you should continue with your therapies along with the meds. The combination of therapy and meds is more superior in efficacy than either treatment alone.
She was right in suggesting that the combination may cause sedation but in most of the cases it doesnt and there is nothing wrong in taking those medication.
Regarding the cold sweat episode, it could be either ways. You should try some other meeication if you are suspecting adverse drug reaction.
So do continue with your therapy.
Regards.

After taking just three Bactrim, I am weak when I stand up, cold arms, dry heaves, face flushed and trouble eating. A month ago, the doctor gave me CIPRO and I reacted negatively to that also. (the first antibiotic I took in. August was Amoxocillin and the same thing happened.). are there any antibiotics left that I could take without the negatively,

I do not want to go back to the ER to have Thank you for protecting me, and the general public, Starbucks! Though I am a stockholder, I generally make my coffee at home....I believe I will stop by and order me some Starbucks! in an IV.

also, does seroquel and Ambien react to antibiotics?

sorry about the Starbucks comment. I don't know how it happened.

If I continue on Bactrim, will the side effects get worse or do they subside after a couple days?

What about KEFLEX? I saw it online and thot it sounded better suited for me.

My family doctor would not give me another anti-biotic because I seem to be allergic to amoxicillin, Bactrim and CIPRO. Instead, she wants me to see an infectious disease doctor......I probably will have to wait a long time for an appt. So that's a little depressing. (Yesterday, I was just worried about dealing with anxiety...now this...too much.)

All night I experienced nausea as a result of taking Bactrim. (I know now that when a doctor asks me if I am allergic to any drugs, I shall say...sulfa.) Is Ther something I can take for this nausea? Or. do I have to wait it out? I've had the nausea for about six hours. All through the night, I tried to vomit a couple times and took Pepto Bismal, but dry heaves only.

Sorry to be such a complainer, but I will soon close the discussion. Thanks to you, Dr XXXXXXX

Hello XXXXXXX
You can ask as many question as you want and I would be more than happy to serve you. If you want you can always continue the question without closing the discussion. Its entirely your choice!
Yes, you are allergic to sulfa drugs. The nausea is self limiting and will resolve by self. Drink plenty of water for the drug to get it off your system.
One option is to take Ondansetron but it may not be needed.

It has now been nine hours with nausea. I show no improvement and very uncomfortable. I am trying to drink lots of water and a cup of hot water over fresh ginger slices.
Just out of curiosity, could it be the two tablets of PB8(probiotic....Dietary supplement) I took last night around seven? I am not lactose tolerant and using it as a diet enrichment. Is Onndansetron an over the counter med?

In India its an OTC

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
I unrerstand that they are probably the most difficult 9 hours. But one thing is certain that this nausea will not last for ever.
You can take ranitidine 150mg twice a day along with ondensetron popularly known as emset 4 mg. Both the drugs are available as OTC drugs in India. I am not sure how they are available in US.
Try taking some rest andstick to bed. Maybe some good sleep will make you feel good.

Right after my last post, I asked my husband to take me to the ER. The first thing the doctor gave me was a small chewable ondensettron and it did the trick. (So i could have saved a lot of money by following your directions) He also gave me a prescription for a more friendly anti-biotic......cephalexin. He told me to just deal with the side effects and take for ten days. They checked for allergic reactions and there was nothing. (Rash, etc.) I hope I can tolerate the side effects if there are any.

Oh. the meset is by prescription here in the US

I will sleep hopefully tonight if the UTI doesn't keep me busy.

Thanks for all your comforting words. I am on the third day of takin Keflex and I am tolerating the side effects. Nausea is gone, but constipation is not. Taking it one day at a time. Apparently nearly all antibiotics have some side effects. I didn't know that and probably could have been treated successfully by the other three antibiotics that my doctor prescribed (amoxicillin, Bactrim and CIPRO). Do you agree? Is it likely that I will see an improvement in the infection within a couple or three days? Ten days is a long time to wait.

Thanks again, XXXXXXX

Do you recommend magnesium citrate tablets for treating constipation?

yes there will be improvement in 3. days

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
If the new antibiotic is effective you will see the difference in 2 - 3 days. Its true that every drug has some or other side effect and yhe response of most of the antibiotic is kore or less the same.
Magnesium citrate is a good drug for constipation. However the initial prefered treatment should be " Ispaghula" taken at night with plenty of water.
Hole that helps

At four in the morning, I began to feel nausea so I took one ondensettron and then again at 6:30 .....Is it a bad thing to take this med so frequently? I need another right now at 9:30 and afraid to take too much. I also have to urinate again.I'm afraid this new antibiotic isn't working. Is nausea a common side effect and shouldn't I have adjusted by now.

Not good to take anything more

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the follow-up question.
All the antibiotics have a tendency to cause acidity and nausea.
You have finished the fifth day and now you should stop the antibiotic. It would not be advisable to take ondansetron tree times a day. Two is fine.
Drink plenty of water.
Get your urine culture and sensitivity done and look for the antibiotic which would be effective. Take the one which is effective.

The ER doctor prescribed ten days of Keflex...3x a day to finally get rid of the infection. I have already tried amoxicillin, Bactrin and CIPRO. So I am counting on this fourth antibiotic to work. I am just beginning the 5th day of antibiotics. ......by the way.....so I am in the middle of my ten day treatment. Regarding Promethazine (substitute for ondensettron) The bottle reads......Take ONE every six hours or as needed.......Promethazine XXXXXXX 12.5.mg tabs........I have already taken three and will not take more.

he Keflex is 500mg. Is that quite a lot?

Brief Answer:
No Dietary suggestions

Detailed Answer:
Hello
No specific dietary restrictions required. You can take what ever you like.
Regarding the antibiotic, 500mg is OK but a 10 day course is not something that is routinely given. It is mostly given for 5 days. As I have previously suggested, since already 3 of the antibiotics have been tried without much relief. Your next step should be to do a culture and sensitivity testing of your urine to find the exact antibiotic that would be useful.

the Lab at the ER did a culture and this is the antibiotic they came up with that would take care of the infection. All the other three were given to me for five days so I guess they just wanted to make sure. I go in for another urine culture and follow-up next Tuesday at my Internist's office. I already checked with Dr. XXXXXXX to see if I could use Magnesium citrate 400mg tablets today for constipation, but she told me it might interfere with the anti-biotic so she said to wait.

Here is a question for you, Dr. XXXXXXX I am very concerned to have an answer.

If I am losing unintended weight and I suspect that my anxiety is a factor. If for some reason, the body is unable to absorb nutrients from food, is it also true that the body DOES not absorb medicines/anti-biotics? Is anxiety preventing my body from attacking infections? I hope you are able to answer this.

Thanks, again.

Brief Answer:
Anxiety does not effect the absorption

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Anxiety increases the basal metabolic rate. That is the reason you have lost weight. Further anxiety also reduces the appetite in certain cases. Anxiety will never cause reduced absorption and will not interfere with absorption of medications.
Anxiety if present over along period of time will add to stress and make you prone for infection.
Hope that answers your queries,

I was seen Friday by the nurse/practitioner and she immediately diagnosed a yeast infection and prescribed a one-time pill and a cream for my vaginal soreness. She did a quick strip test on my urine, said it was clear and then sent it out for a culture. I don't think she made a good judgment. Keflex doesn't seem to be working because I still have extreme burning and have to urinate frequently. I am very worried that there is nothing left to do to address this infection......that antibiotics have no effect. I have taken Keflex for eight days and I see no change. Do you think this is possible? I am so tired of worrying about my urinary tract.

Hello XXXXXXX
Keflex is an antibiotic and will act on bacteria. It will not act on any yeast infection.
As even after 10 day course of antibiotic your burning pain is persisting and that this suggests that it could be a non-bacterial infection. I understand that it is taking longer than usual but have patience.
Anti-yeast medications are one-time pills. They should help you.
