Painful Whitish Lumps On Lower Leg Bone Area, Shooting Pain Through Leg, Unable To Stand, Straighten Leg. Reason?

Posted on Mon, 16 Jul 2012
Question: Hi,

I have 3 quarter size lumps on my lower leg in the area of the bone whitish in color. That bone is always hurting for the last week or so. Also, my hip/back area (right there where they meet) are so painful taht at times I cannot bring my leg up more than 2 inches or if i'm in a sitting position cannot straighten into a standing position for a minute... I have to stand crouched. It hurts when I sit or stand. The pain shoots through my leg and feels almost like XXXXXXX horses in my calf muscle and the right side of the muscle in my thigh at times as well. I fell on the same side at about the same time it started hurting. I was wondering if you could shed any light onto any of these symptoms? Thank you.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
All your symptoms could be due to osteomyelitis , which is an infection of the bone, which can cause fever, the pain that you have described and the quarter sized lumps as well ( they could be a collection of pus).
Alternatively, you could also have sciatica, which occurs due to the compression of the sciatic nerve in the back. This leads to the shooting pain you have described.
The lumps could be caused by an entirely different process.
In order to help you further, I would request the following:
a. Do you have fever, malaise?
b. Do the lumps hurt?
c. Does bending forward increase the pain in the back?
d. Is it possible for you to upload a picture of the lumps? You can use the 'Upload your reports' section on the right
Awaiting your reply

Hello,

Thank you for your quick response. Here are the answers to your questions:

a. Do you have fever, malaise?
no

b. Do the lumps hurt?
the lumps themselves don't i guess, but the bone under them does... so, however you qualify that

c. Does bending forward increase the pain in the back?
yes by a lot

d. Is it possible for you to upload a picture of the lumps? You can use the 'Upload your reports' section on the right

they do not photograph well b/c they are just a little different in color from my skin and not much of a puffiness, i only noticed them because i put some analgesic gel on my leg yesterday trying to make the pain subside. i noticed them as i rubbed it on.

by the way, most times... my leg pain is worse than my back pain but my back pain (some of it) has been occuring for about 2 yrs

it started when i was walking in the library and all the sudden my back just had tremendous pain that made me weak in the knees to the point of not being able to stand. i had to catch myself on the wall. the doctor at that time said it was only a pulled muscle but the pain continues to return and when it happens, my husband has to help me around the house (even to the bathroom) for 3 days because it is so hard for me to walk. the rest of the time it still hurts but not excrutiating, that back pain is in my entrire lower back. not just by my hip. but the hip/back pain is new. oh, and all of it ... the hip/back pain, and the leg bone, as well as the XXXXXXX horse sensations occur on the same side.. the right.

Hi,
Thanks for writing back.
In all probability, you are suffering from sciatica. The lumps seem to be harmless lipomas which do not need to be treated per se. The pain that you have is actually travelling from the back into the leg and it is not these lumps that are causing the pain.
I would suggest the following measures whenever you have pain:
a. Lie on a flat bed, absolutely straight
b. Do not bend forward or lift any weights. This needs to be done at all times.
c. The following stretches will help relieve the pain
WWW.WWWW.WW WWW.WWWW.WW d. Exercise regularly. This would include a brisk walk 35-45 minutes daily
e. If you still have pain, talk to your physician about drugs like gabapentin. They have been shown to greatly help people with sciatica.
f. If you dont feel better, please see your physician and a MRI of the spine may be in order.
Let me know if I can address any more concerns.
