Hemoglobin electrophoresis is advisable in partner
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on Ask A Doctor forum.
The hemoglobin electrophoresis report raised Hb A2 and low Hb A1.
This picture is suggestive of beta thalassemia trait.
The trait usually does not produce any symptom in the affected individual.
However, it is important that the partner of the affected individual should not have similar hemoglobin abnormality since it can pass on the children and hence produce more severe thalassemia.
Thus, the partner needs to get hemoglobin electrophoresis before planning family.
Marriage between individuals having thalassemia trait or disease is discouraged since a severe form of disease can develop in future progeny.
Thanks and take care
