Dear Doctor,
I am 80 year old. I had diabetes since 2011 and hypothroidsm since 2013.The very first blood test for TSH shown 10.00.Hence my physician prescribed 100 mcg thyronorm.Later on the levels come to normal levels .T3 and T4 have never gone above desired levels and also i have no symptoms at all.At present i am taking Thryonorm 50 mcg.The following are the levels during last 2 years.
TSH
16/2/20 .4.4 50 MCG THYRONORM
1/7/21 4.4 do
22/1/22 6.9 75 mcg
9/5/22 2.2 50 mcg
Kindly clarify
whether the thyronorm is to be taken even the Tsh T3 and T4 levels show normal ?
Whether i have to take this medicine lifelong or can i stop when once the levels are normal?
Sofar i have had no symptoms at all all these 12 years.
In addition to this, do i have to take any other medicine to support this medicine thyronorm?
Can reduce the dosage
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
if you were Hypothyrod previously and now with normal levels of thyroid hormone and TSh that is because of the medication you are taking. If you stop taking medication, then you may go back to the initial status itself.
I recommend you to try reducing the dosage to 25mcg for now and repeat the test after 3 months. If the result is normal can be further reduced to 12.5mcg. In case if it stays normal even after 3 months of 12.5mcg, then you can plan on stopping the medication altogether.
if there is reversing of the levels, and if TSH increases above the reference range on decreasing the dosage, it means you must increase the dosage and you getting off the medication is difficult.
Hope, I answered your query.
Wish you good health.
Regards,
