Please Suggest A Diet Or Any Routine Be Followed To Bring Both Sugar And Cholesterol Down

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Nov 2024
Question: Hello Doctor,

My sugar and cholesterol have been up and down in the last few years. The recent test in April is Fasting sugar - 107, after - 166 & cholesterol - 159 - April 10th and my HbA1c is 6.7

My working hours are odd and mostly I go to bed by 2 am at the night. I have changed my diet over time and have roti/bread/millets which brought down my nos.

I am concerned about the sugar level and worried about its effect on the kidney. I wanted to bring it down to a normal level through diet and exercise. Please let me know should I take sugar medicines and if has a direct effect on the body in long run and can I leave the medication after the levels come down. I am more inclined towards bringing it down through natural ways if there is any.

Please suggest a diet or any routine be followed to bring both sugar and cholesterol down.

Regards
doctor

Brief Answer:
Diet chart needed

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Although and fasting and post-prandial blood sugar levels are normal, HBA1C is bit on higher side. It means that sometimes your blood sugar levels are going high in past 3 months. In diet, you may start avoiding sugary foods like cold drinks, juices, sugar and foods that contain sugar like cookies, cakes, ice creams etc. Karela-jamun juice is considered effective to control mild derangement of blood sugar. Regular exercise is also needed. I will recommend that you follow lifestyle modifications for atleast 3 months and then re-check your blood sugar and HBA1C levels. Currently you do not need medicines or you can take one dose of Nishamalakki (an ayurvedic medicine).
Long term medicines are needed when blood sugar levels are really going outside normal range on regular check-ups and not controlled with lifestyle modifications. It can be discontinued in some patients when blood sugar levels are controlled.
I will suggest that you request a diet chart from our dietician and follow it.
