Pregnant. Rubella Test Done. What Does The Value Signify?
Question: Hi!
A friend of mine is pregnant, she works at a hospital with many children.
Here are results from rubella test:
week 6 - IgG > 500.0 IU/ml (<10 negative; > 10 positive)
week 8 - IgG >500.0 IU/ml(<10 negative.; > 10 positive)
IgM 11.1 Au/m (< 20 negative.; > 25 positive)
Should we be worried?

There is absolutely nothing to worry as her IgM is negative which means there is no current infection.
IgG positive means that she had rubella infection in the past and has nothing to do with anything currently.This high IgG is not going to cause any problem in her pregnancy.

The girl was in contact with infected child during week 3-4.
While IgM is negative, it is present at level 11.1 in week 8. Doesn't this mean there is a risk that IgM was positive during week 4, as the only result we have for it is from week 8?
In other words, is it possible after exposure in week 3 and possible positive IgM in week 4, the IgM to go back to negative (current 11.1) in week 8?
Also, we were alarmed that if exposed, even not infected, with even slightly raised levels, there is a risk for the baby from that exposure. Is this correct?

The presence of IgG antibodies but not IgM antibodies indicates a history of past exposure to the virus or vaccination and indicates that the person tested should be immune to the rubella virus.
At the time of the so called exposure at 3 to 4 weeks,the pregnant female was fully immunized( since she is having high IgG ),so there is no question of her getting infected at the that time.
There is absolutely no danger to the baby or mother.
