Question : My 12 year old step daughter's first period has lasted for 1 month. Its only light spotting now but it has been 1 month. She is extremely active sporty and fit and a slim and healthy build. She eats well. Is it normal? What would cause this. Should we take her to the doctors. Her mum asked her if she wants to go but she said no.

A prolonged episode of menstrual bleeding during the menarche is common. This usually happens due to the hormonal changes that take place in the body.
Bleeding for one month continuously may make your daughter anemic.
Hormonal therapy is the main treatment to regularize the cycles. Blood investigations are also needed to rule out the anemia.
It is best to consult her gynecologist for proper investigations to rule out any complications in the long term.
