Hello,
Thanks for your query.

Important aspects of your query are:
•     46 year old male
•     Complaints of: smelling feces

Smelling feces can occur in following condition in following hierarchy:
-As a habit: Like few people of habit of smelling petrol, nail biting
-Because of some psychological problems (need in person assessment): But in that case his routine, social and occupational life will get affected too.

If he is not having other issues and taking proper hygiene, then no need to worry and just motivate him to leave this habit.

Use behavior principles like:
-Not to talk him for few hours whenever he repeat such behavior
-Praise him when he stopped doing it.

I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
