Question: Recently I had an MRI of my head because I had reason to believe I was starting to experience some form of dementia. The MRI showed black dots, assumed to be polyps (sp),in my far extended nasal system going I guess towards my brain. Are these usually cancerous and what would be the surgical path, e.g. up my nose. Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
Polyps are generally benign.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query and here is my advice.

Polyps into the nasal cavity are in most of the cases, benign and have no relation or contact with the brain.

There is no relation to any form of dementia too.

Polyps are removed surgically if these were found to cause issues such as narrowing of breathing pathways, recurrent sinusitis, or, in rare cases, when there is suspicion for malignancy.

I think you should get evaluated clinically and endoscopically by an ENT Doctor who can also evaluate correctly the MRI findings that you are asking for.

He can also decide to remove them by endoscopy (through your nose or mouth).

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
