Hi XXXXXXX,
The GGTP level is about two times the normal value, depending on the laboratory used. For a male, a normal level is about 35 to 40. This is not an emergency, but you need to get further testing and evaluation.
GGTP can be elevated due to a liver problem, but also due to other problems in the body. It is very non-specific, and provides little information regarding the type of liver problem you might have.
Your doctor will need to order further laboratory studies to evaluate your liver which include a full panel of liver enzymes (AST, ALT, Alkaline phosphatase, Bilirrubin - total and indirect, albumin, total protein level). Based on those laboratory results, you may also need to get at least a liver ultrasound. If there is any consistent abnormality, then the reason for the problem needs to be sought. This is a very extensive list of problems, but again, based on those initial laboratory tests further work up can be directed, and usually a source can be found (either medications, viral hepatitis, alcohol, fat in the liver, autoimmune liver disease, etc etc).
By the way if you get abdominal pain around the right upper side of your belly and fever or chills you should seek medical attention rapidly, as this could represent inflammation of your gallbladder or a stone impacted in your biliary tree.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.
