Question: I am 19 months post up from a anterior dissecting with an interbody fusion with a cage on levels L5-S1. I have numbness in both feet effecting all toes, there is no sensitivity in toes but I get a feeling of toes being cold or like a "frozen sensation" in toes. This is very uncomfortable especially at night. Should I follow up with a neurologist to talk about these issues? Not sure if what I need to do at this time.

Brief Answer:
Diagnosis: Peripheral neuropathy

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The numbness and altered sensation you are experiencing bilaterally on your feet and toes is likely to be peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy can occur due to several underlying causes like diabetes, hypothyroidism, vitamin B12 deficiency, uremia etc.

Nerve conduction study, complete blood count, complete metabolic profile are required to identify peripheral neuropathy and underlying cause. You can follow up either with your primary provider or neurologist for detailed evaluation.

Peripheral neuropathy is treated with gabapentin which reduces the altered sensations. Also, the underlying cause like diabetes should be managed adequately. It is also important to assess the blood flow to your legs which can be done with doppler ultrasound.

Hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you need further clarification.
