Question: Should I take SSRI%E2%80%99s. Hello, recently I was perscribed Celexa. It is for anxiety for drug dependence specifically opiates. Recently, I have avoided using opiates and have been thinking clearly. Thinking how my day does not need to revolve around substnace use. I am mainly apprehensive and scared of potential side effects. I am also scared of relapsing while I am on ssris. Do I need them?

First of all I like to inform you that Celexa is generally safe even if it is used for longer duration (say months or years). The side effects are generally evident within few weeks and long term side effects are very rare especially for females.

In addition we need to understand that prescription of any medication is made while keeping the risk and benefits. Even we consider potential side effects of Celexa we need to understand that it is essential at this stage to keep your nerves under control. Your acknowledgement that you still fear relapse and have excessive thinking about the substance abuse, points that there is excessive anxiety undergoing till date.

In my oinion there is need for deeper understanding of the problem and need to continue medication. In case there is any side effects report immediately to your doctor/pharmacist including me.
