Question : Dear Doctor, I am a 35 (just completed 35) year female, got married 5 months back and now I am 4.5 months pregnant. I was under tremendous mental pressure when I got married and till now the pressure continued and will continue for some more time till the time I completely decide if I want to quit this relation or be in this relation. From the Day1 of marriage till date there is not even a single day I cried less than 3 hours. I am now 4.5 months pregnant and did not use any medicine (folic/multi vitamin/hemoglobin) except that I took one TT injection. Recently diagnosed with less hemoglobin levels 8.8. And started taking hemoglobin injections through IV. Got early TIFFA done and it is ok no issues in that. I have a birth defect in spine. Given this conditions and my future uncertainity to stay with my husband forever, should I continue this preganancy? I am worried that I didn't use even a single medicine for the benefiit of pregnancy so far and I had birth defect in spine and my mental pressure and condition. I am thinking that there is a high risk for baby's health. EArly TIFFA test outcome is ok, but I think not using folic acid, vitamins, heamo tablets and my mental pressure will definetely have greater imapct on the kid's behavioral and physical health over long run.
Kindly advice if it is better to terminate pregnancy and try again after my mental condition gets stable and I continue my relation with husband. I know it is tough to conceive again but I preferred a healthy child rather than unhealthy child. But every doctor i visited have discoraged me too much for aboriton saying I can not conceive but I am feeling as if I am spolining 100 years life of one individual.
Please advice me doctor.

Brief Answer:
Should continue pregnancy
Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
It is very sad to hear this all and I understand your problem.
It is a big problem I know but answer lies in this only that you need this child even more so that warmth between you and your husband will increase and you will have something to look forward to apart from your husband and problems.
As far as supplements are concerned you can start them now also and it will be fine soon and don't worry about any mental illness in the baby as in utero effects are not there.
So in my opinion also you should continue the pregnancy.
Wish you the best of health.
Regards
Dr Manisha

Dear Madam,
I don't want to be selfish and compromise on kid's health for my marital benefits. Kindly advice me with respect to medical grounds alone. I am reading everywhere that folic acid needs to be used from the time of conceiving itself and heamoglobin levels play major role in baby's overall development. I have never used any and my mental health is down, isn't this going to be bad impact on the baby's 100 year life? I always suffered with anemia in my life as my mother was aneamic while she was pregnant. And I am afraid same happens to my child...

Brief Answer:
All can be compensated
Detailed Answer:
I appreciate your concenrns but there is nothing to worry as yet.
Folic acid supplementation is definitely very important in pregnancy but if ultrasound documents normal head and spine development in the baby then the prime motive of folic acid supplementation is solved and now only maintainence dose is needed.
Iron deficiency of the baby is an issue when the mother is iron deficient at the time of delivery of the baby so we have ample time to make up for the same moreover iron is given after 3 months completion and a total of 100 tablets are needed in pregnancy so for that also there is enough time.
All in all your baby will be healthy only and your mental health is important for your future health only dear.
You can discuss your personal issues with me anytime so dont feel lonesome and think otherwise.
Take care.
