Should Pain Medication Be Resumed If The Pain From A Ligament Injury In My Left Ankle Comes Back Completing A Course Of Medicine?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 Feb 2024
Question: May 12: I had a ligament injury in my left ankle. While playing Volleyball, i landed on another person's leg and twisted my left ankle inwards.
I consulted a physiotherapist right after injury who advised to apply ice and tie crepe bandage over the injury and suggested tablet Ultracet as a pain killer.
I took that for two days but i still had difficulty walking. So, i consulted an orthopedic on May 14.

May 14: He advised an X Ray. X Ray was clean, after examination, he concluded that it is a ligament tear and advised me to tie crepe bandage, apply cold packs, and take Chymoral Forte, Emanzen D and Cyra D for three days.

May 17: During a follow up consultation, since i was feeling better and had no pain while walking, he asked me to stop medication and continue with crepe bandage. He suggested i start walking like i normally did.

May 18-21: I walked more than what i did during the first week of injury and stopped medication as advised by doctor. The pain is back. I even have pain in the muscle/ligament in the front of my leg where the leg joins foot.

Should i continue with medication for few more days and reduce movement?
Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Avoid any painful weight bearing on the foot.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Resuming all the normal activities so soon after an injury will cause pain again. A ligament injury needs at least three weeks to heal properly. You need to avoid all painful activities and use an ankle brace for an extra support. Do get an MRI scan done in case the pain still persists to rule out any complete tear.
Do continue with the medicines for a week and keep the leg elevated on a pillow while resting so that the swelling if any reduces.
I hope this answers your query.
