Thick smelling phlegm could be due to bacterial or fungal infection somewhere in the nasal tract. Have you taken any antibiotics? What medicines did you take recently? What colour is the sputum? I will suggest to get the sputum tested under microscope, gram stain, culture and sensitivity. Only then a medicine can be suggested. Meanwhile do gargles with warm water and some salt (just salty to taste like tears) twice a day.
