Question : So to keep a long story short, I suffered an illiofemoral ligament tear as a result of overuse. I had been dealing with a glute and hamstring muscle tear 1 year before and lost a lot of strength as a result. I’ve done plenty of physical therapy to treat this. Just as I started to feel better and become active, by biking, biking uphill, and taking longer walks, I figure I might as well try snowboarding (bear in my I’ve been snowboarding for 15+ years so I know how to ride) again. I did one run (I did not fall, crash or lose control) and felt my legs, more particularly my glutes, were fatigued. I wasn’t in pain, just sore. In the morning after, I was still able to stretch and walk fine. However, as the day went by, a lot pain in my right hip began to set in when I walked and climbed the stairs. By the end of the day (1 day after injury) my right hip was really hurting and I was limping when I walked. Also, when I changed my pants, I could not balance on my right leg. Concerned about an injury, I went to the doctor and was sent to get an MRI. My MRI, which I got 1 week after suffering the injury said ”There appears to be joint effusion of the right hip with fluid both sides of the illiofemoral ligament on the right side. There also appears to be a tear through the insertion of this on the greater trochanter region, which appears to be full-thickness with fluid in both sides of this”. How serious is this? Will I need surgery?

Now I’m approaching 5 weeks after the injury. Pain in my right hip went down. Now the pain is just a little bit of pain that comes and goes. I’m becoming more and more able to balance on my right leg. The limping when I walk is going away. I see the orthopedic in two weeks and will likely do more lengthy rounds of physical therapy. What can I do at this point to help my injury heal? What should I avoid doing to prevent aggravating my injury?

Brief Answer:
Surgery is the best option.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
You have a complete tear of iliofemoral ligament. It is best to get it surgically repaired for an early healing. With physical therapy also it can heal but the full gain in strength is doubtful. You can discuss regarding the options with your orthopedician.
To help the healing you need to avoid all kind of stressful movements of the hip. Take rest as much as possible.
I hope this answers your query.
