Question : Hoping to get answers to my problem. I was misdiagnosed and over medicated last fall. I went to my then family doctor, who rarely sees his patients, but gives them over to the nurse practitioner. I was experiencing a strange pulsing sensation, which felt like a heart beat, but was actually intestinal related. I should have gone to my bariatric surgeon, but only found out later (after being given many unnecessary meds) that I probably have an internal hernia, which flares up. Because doctor's office had no idea, and instead of referring me to someplace else, they concluded that it must be just "in my head" or anxiety, so they gave me adivan, and other similar things, without telling me what I was taking. Weeks later, when I unknowingly stopped taking it abruptly, my blood pressure shot up from normal to high (184/104 at emergency room) I was told to go to my new doctor and get on blood pressure meds, and we tried a half dozen, one of which (losinipril) gave me a cough which is still not totally gone after months. I am very reactive to many things; a lifelong condition. I am now taking amlopidine, but it makes my ankles and feet swell, although I have no other reactions. I am still taking a small amount of adivan, and even .25 mg in the mornings leaves me feeling anxious many times in the later part of the day.
I was a totally healthy active and sane 73 year old woman before doctors and Big Pharma stole my health. I am told it is too dangerous to take lasix, or anything similar. This has interrupted my daily life and made me feel angry and frustrated. To make matters worse, either the meds or my letting down my diligence of diet has caused me to gain over ten pounds.
I want my health and peace of mind back.
Who can help me?
I have left out many facets of this story, like other medications that I was given and took a few of, or other side effects, like constipation.
Surely, someone can adjust my meds, or give me an answer. The "pat" answers, like wear support hose and keep my feet up, are not what I am looking for.

Please help me

Although I am always afraid to try new meds, it seems like there should be a blood pressure medication that won't give me more anxiety nor make my legs swell. Also I have been told by another doctor to start taking zoloft, but every time I try it, I have severe anxiety, panic attacks, and they say to "just get through it". How do I do that? I would like to take small doses of adivan, usually .25mg a day. How bad is that? I need something to perk me up; give me energy and happiness. I have also been taking small doses of CBD oil. Kinda helps, but not the longtime solution. Will I never be the way I was last year? My life has been stolen from me. I know all the "anxiety techniques" like meditation, and so on. I never needed to do any of this before all of the meds. Is my brain permanently scarred? I used to enjoy every day and do productive things, enjoy vacations, get out and walk several miles, work in the yard, do hobbies, and so much else. I never imagined that I would lose that ability, both physically and mentally. I want to take the least amount of drugs possible, and get back to normal. I know a lot of folks who take blood pressure meds with no problems. Should I go to a major place like IU Medical, or Vanderbilt? I just want my life back!

Brief Answer:
You can take tab. Metoprolol 50 mg after consulting your doctor. See details.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

As you can't tolerate tab. Lisinopril and tab. Amlodipine because of the cough and swelling over feet, I'd suggest you take a drug from another class i.e. tab. Metoprolol 50 mg to control blood pressure, provided that you don't have a history of COPD, asthma, glaucoma. As this is a prescription medication, please start after proper examination and consultation by your physician.

For anxiety, you can continue with the tab. Ativan, if it's not tolerated then you can take tab. Alprazolam 0.5 mg after consultation with your physician.

I'd also suggest you do ECG, 2D echocardiography, stress test and if not done earlier. Along with that continue regular exercise, meditation, healthy diet, salt-restricted diet.

I think this will clarify your concern. Kindly follow-up if there are any further queries.

Take care.

Regards,
