Posted on Mon, 7 Jul 2014
Question: I took 24mg of prednisone at once and had had a shot earlier today (sinus infection and laryngitis and don't know what the shot was.) In an hour, after eating dinner, my blood pressure was 187/102 and my heart rate was 132. Well, it has gone down three hours later to 152/81 HR 91. Will it be OK to take my 10 mg zolpidem Insead of following directions, I listened to a pharmacist who told me to take the full dosage at once was it dangerous to make that much prednisone at once. I am 88 5 ft and weight 123 lbs

Brief Answer:
Prednisone

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to hear about the reaction to prednisone.

People may sometimes respond variably to prednisone. Dosing is often weight based t and you do not weight a lot so this is a sizeable dose for you. However, weight is only determinant of the dose to be given to an individual. One of the other factors is the condition for which it is being prescribed. This also will impact the dose and duration of treatment with prednisone.
I see it is being given to you for laryngitis.
Please contact your prescribing doctor regarding this, and ask if you should continue the same dose.
Prednisone taken chronically long term is very well known to raise the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, cataract and glaucoma to name a few conditions.
But it is unusual for a marked rise in blood pressure after a moderate dose like yours. Again, as I said earlier, it s possible your body is more sensitive to the effects of prednisone. So it is important you speak with your doctor instead of changing the treatment program yourself.
