Suggest A Second Opinion About What Was Suggested To Be Trigeminal Neuralgia After Experiencing Dryness And Pain In The Eye

Question: I have eye pain mostly in the right. My eye doctor told me that is Trigeminal Neuralgia. My family doctor said the same but the information of TN she gave me does not mention anything eye pain. My right eye has pain sometimes and irritated, my cheek gets red and swollen. It looks like immflamation of the nerves back of the eye as long as I found in some web site of eye pain. I have to admit that I refused to dilate my eye because I had pain and no one to drive me taking more than one hour to come home. My eye doctor said she could introduce one specialist of eye nerve but I found she did not. I will see her on Thursday again. My right eye's vision is getting worse. My eye doctor prescribed Amitriptyline 25mg. one tab in bed time and increasing dosage to 2tab in the morning and 2tab in bed time. It looks helping but I still have pain in my right eye sometimes. The pain in my eyes have been for 4months and other doctors had told me that I have dry eye I know this for years and recommended different eye drops etc. But I stick to thera tears vials.
Also she prescribed Neo/Poly/Dex Op 3.5-10,000-0.1 Sus. for bacteria infection.
I want have second opinion of my eye condition.
Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Carbamezapine is drug of choice.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Actually face is supplied by nerve called facial nerve.
Facial nerve has five branches in which the first branch called temporal.

Temporal branch supplies orbicularis occuli muscle. Inflammation any where along the path of facial nerve may cause pain and swelling of this nerve hence may in long term result in loss of vision also.

Firstly, get a retinoscopy done if its normal then ask your doctor to add a anti inflammatory or to give you sub cutaneous injections of methyl prednisolone so that inflammation in nerves could be controlled and hence loss of vision would stop.

Drug of choice in your case is not Amitryptaline but Carbamazapine. So ask your doctor to start you on Carbamazepine.
Get your temporomandibular joint checked by ENT doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
