Suggest A Suitable Formula Feed For A Toddler Suffering With Indigestion

Posted on Thu, 11 Feb 2021
Question: On this 18th my son would be completing his 2nd month. He was an IUGR baby with low birth weight of 2kgs at 36 weeks 5 days due to my high BP issues. I could not breastfeed my first baby due to low milk supply and this time my son has been to totally dependent on formula feed. Our pediatrician had suggested nan pro 1 which I continued till date but found that he has gastric and abdomen pain while passing stools. Even the stools look like loose motions and he doesn't sleep properly due to indigestion. 2 days ago I tried lactogen and found that he is passing stools after every feed or even whenever he releases gas with lots of discomfort. I fed him farex but he didn't have it after 2 sips so I stopped it. I am very much bothered about his growth in terms of size and weight. He was 3kg last week. Please suggest me a good formula.

Brief Answer:
This is gasrocolic reflex - nothing to worry.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

What your kid is having is not a diarrhea or loose stools and is only a gastro-colic reflux. It is quite common for babies of this age group t pass small amount of diarrhea or loose stools soon after feeds. This need not be treated as diarrhea and especially antibiotics are not indicated.

When the baby takes milk , the stomach expands - then when it is contracting it sets off a wave form which moves down the intestines and when that wave reaches the lower down rectum, a small quantity of the stool is evacuated out. This is the basis for gastro-colic reflex. Do not worry.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

Another issue is that for a baby with birth weight of 2 kilos - gaining 1 kilo in 2 months is good. This means NanPro 1 hs suited him nutritionally very well. I suggest yo not to change it please.

Do not give Farex till the baby is 6 months please.

Passing of gassy stools is also because - some babies - in their eagerness to have milk, will gulp air and so this has to come out as flatus.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your detailed explanation sir. I will continue nan pro as advised by you. I had few more doubts about it. When I was in the hospital the nurse said that we can feed the mixed milk upto 2 hours and after that we should throw away the left out part. But I see it's clearly mentioned on the formula pack that the diluted content should be consumed within half an hour of preparation. If it true then it will really bother the parents who depend solely on formulas as it will require more quantity and it is not affordable to everyone. Please suggest the safest time gap to use the formula once mixed. Also let me know if it is safe to give gripe water daily or is it really required for formula fed babies as they can't digest it like other babies. How often can we give or do we need to give it only when baby has colic issues. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on feeding

Detailed Answer:
Hi... coming to your queries directly -
1. I usually advice that once the formula feeding milk is prepared it better be given within half an hour.
2. That is the reason why we should not mix too much of quantity as sometimes the babies may refuse it.
3. Always mix in 30 ml quantities so that once the baby is finished with it, you can again remix it in no time.
4. What you say is true that if a family depends only on formula feeding them one pack should be over within 4 days which is extremely costly. in XXXXXXX scenario it is really a financially difficult issue. I agree with you but there is no other go or solution for this.
5. No need for Gripe water as it is not going to be a the harmful or useful. It is not scientifically proven that Gripe water is going to help in digestion. There is no scientific recommendation that Gripe water should be given for better digestion in formula fed babies.
Hope this helps.
