Question: Hi, I'm on XXXXXXX 20 mg from past 1 year and gained 12-14 kgs weight. Doctor advised me to shift to Venlafaxin. Is this safe to use and no side effects? will Venlafaxin reduce weight?

Can I use Serta instead Venlafaxin?

Brief Answer:
It is safe and weight gain is less common with Venlafaxine

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concern about the side effects in form of weight gain.

Although venlafaxine is largely safe but there is still some weight gain with its use. It is possible that you will lose some weight but the possibility is less unless there is life style modification in appropriate manner which includes regular exercise and low calorie food intake.

However the side effects are much less with venlafaxine in compare to paroxetine which causes sedation and weight gain as prominent side effects.

Among the available antidepressants desvenlafaxine, fluoxetine and bupropion have very less propensity to cause weight gain and any of them can be considered.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks for your response. Actually my issue is Anxiety and not depression. Doctor prescribed me this medicine for Anxiety and occasional panic attack.

For this, Can I use Serta? As one of my friend is using the same and I see no side effects or weight gain for him and he is using it from past 4 yrs.

Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Serta is also helpful and little weight gain in compare to paroxetine

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for follow up.

Although everyone is different and responds differerently to every mefivine but overall serta have less propensity to cause weight gain in compare to paroxetine but more than fluoxetine.

Having said this there is no problem if you opt for serta instead of venlafaxine.

Considering anxiety the option of bupropion is out but other options remain here as potential agents for you.

I hope this helps you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for follow up.

Although there are no conversion rules for equivalent dose between different antidepressants, from my practical experience I can state that for 20 mg Paroxetine 100 mg of sertraline and 150 mg of venlafaxine can be expected to deliver same results.

I hope this answers you further.
