Question : My son who is 8 years old has tested positive for strep (with rapid strep test) 3 times in the last month. His dr says that it is not responding to antibotics. He went on 10/20 tested positive and was given a bicillin shot, 2 days later he was no better so the dr called in azithromycin (250 mg per day) for him. He started feeling better after that but a few days later he started running fever complaining with his stomach and throat hurting again. Took him back to dr on 11/3, tested positive for strep, they put him on cefdinir (500 mg per day), same as before he started to feel better while he was taking it and a few days later he starts to feel bad again, took him back yesterday 11/15 and he tested positive for strep again!
He had a throat culture done and the only thing it showed was routine respiratory flora, heavy growth.
He's had his tonsils out and he is not a carrier. I just don't know what to do, I really don't like him being on antiboitics for this long but I don't know what else to do!

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics not needed. Gurgling with lukewarm water should help.

Thanks for asking on Health care magic.
I have carefully gone through the details. Let me remark that Strep throat does not routinely need administration of antibiotics. All that needs to be done is to gurgle with lukewarm water. The BH pdy can take care of such infections.
I understand that a series of antibiotics have been tried, but unfortunately it is only making the scenario worse by selecting out the most resistant bacteria which are not susceptible to routine antibiotics. I would therefore not suggest further antibiotics. Gurgling thrice with lukewarm water should help in resolution of the problem.
