Question : My son is 8 months old now. When he travelled in an aeroplane at the age of 6 weeks, our paeditrician prescribed "Otogesic" ear drops for him, half an hour before flight take-off. Now again he has to travel in an aeroplane. Is it required to use any ear drops for him ? Also, "Otogesic" ear drops are not available now. Is there any substitute ?
Brief Answer:
Try Otocin or Lidozone
Detailed Answer:
Hi!
Thanks for writing to us.
It is common for babies to get ear pain during air travel.
You can keep otocin or lidozone ear drops.
This will help in decreasing ear pain.
Strictly speaking I wouldn't recommend giving it before travel.
Use it only if baby develops pain.
There are simple techniques to prevent ear pain.
1. Keep feeding him during ascent and descent.
2. Use any liquids like milk or water.
This will ensure pressure is equalized on both sides of ear drum.
Wishing your child speedy recovery.
Regards
Dr Arun.
