Question : Hi: My sister had surgery recently (bypass in the leg to improve circulation to her foot) and was discharged to a rehab facility. She still is experiencing pain and the hospital ssent her tot he facility with instructions to give her percocet. Today she is incoherent and cannot even sign her name. The doctor at the facility attributes this to the percocet. When asked if there was anything else that they could give her for the pain, the doctor advised that there was nothing else that could be done. I am quite concerned since, when I had heart surgery and I suffered hallucinations due to percocet my doctor prescribed a different pain med that proved to be effective in relieving my pain. I am unable to reach my doctor at this time. What would be your suggestion as to what medication or medications would be effective in relieving her pain? When I call the rehab/nursing home doctor I want to be able to know what I am talking about. As a retired hospital administrator I know that one must be active in gaining information in order to be able to discuss certain matters with a medical professional. Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Percocet may be substituted.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
If Percocet is found to be the cause of your sister's incoherence, then an alternative pain medication may be combination of Paracetamol with Tramadol for example (Doreta).
Since she is on dialysis too, changes of electrolytes levels in blood, high nitrogen levels, may be responsible for these symptoms too and blood tests (Hemogram, KFT, LFT) are necessary to evaluate these levels.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Greetings.
