Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: I'm nursing a stress fracture on my right foot and the pain is difficult to bare. I have Vicodin but I don't like taking it because it makes me cry and I believe its a bad side effect. Is there an alternative medication I could ask for for pain?

Brief Answer:
Yes , NSAIDs

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. As a doctor i totally agree with you and i myself don't like prescribing it or any other opioid analgesia due to adverse effects as well as addiction properties.

Good and safer alternative option is NSAIDs with any group you want. A simple ibuprofen to complex piroxicam all are the options. I would suggest to start from ibuprofen with 1.2 gram in a day in 3 or 2 equally divided doses and keep the limb elevated for the relief of pain.

Also dont forget to get the tetanus toxoid vaccination as it is recommended in every kind of foot fracture.

Meanwhile take Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, as it really can do your body good. Taking vitamin D supplements also can help. Apart from it do all the precautionary measures in future to avoid such trauma.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
