Brief Answer:
Personal diet/Lifestyle after necessary evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Dear

Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with our health concern.

1. As your XXXXXXX indicates 'vata kapha' imbalance, thus probable dominant features expected are:

i. Due to vata Imbalance: constipation, gas,bloating,cramping, tremors,fear, anxiety,nervousness.
ii. Due to Kapha Imbalance: excess mucous, difficulty rising in the morning, sluggish bowel movements, feeling dull and lethargic.

PS. This is not an exhaustive list, for that direct Physical examination is necessary.

2. Do let me know which Season is there right now, so that Diet is initiated according to your XXXXXXX but doesn't alter the attending Dosha [which is dominant at this season]

3. Please revert back with above questionnaire for Dietary Regime and Lifestyle Management. In the mean time general guidelines which you can follow is/are:

HEALTHY LIVING:

1. Anything you do, go low and go slow and make changes gradually, as your small changes become habit, you can continue to ADD more healthy choices.
2. Eat a variety of nutrient rich food but who have some added advantage like:
. Cabbage (cholesterol lowering benefits).
. carrot (helps in liver detoxification).
. cauliflower (ideal against abdominal problems)
. dates (best for muscle development)
. onions ( contains flavinoids which protect against cardiovascular disease)
. garlic ( has broad spectrum antibiotic properties)

i. Daily regime :Don’t skip breakfast:Take your lunch between 12 -1 PM which is the peak period of Pitta (responsible for digestion) & have your dinner 2 hours before sleeping.
ii. Make sure you do not travel, do strenuous exercise, or indulge in sexual activities within one hour after meal
iii. Proper sleep with proper diet is the key to healthy living in Ayurveda.
iv. Avoid smoking, alcohol, caffeine, eating late at night, stress, drink water instead of colas
v. Practice Yoga, Meditation and go for an exercise regime..
vi. Walk a while after meal to help digestion
viii.     Remember good food leads to noble thoughts with sound memory helping in mental health and social well being

IMMUNOMODULATION (Immunity)
Rasayana drugs (Rejuvenation/Immunomodulators) should be instituted in your management as part of XXXXXXX (palliative) therapy i.e. which corrects the dysfunction of tissues without disturbing the functions of normal tissues, also Rasayana drugs potentiates humoral antibodies, by increasing serum Immunoglobulin’s such as IgA,IgG and IgM.

i. Proteins are essential for antibodies production so milk, egg (white), beans, yogurt, soyamilk, pumpkin, squash, watermelon, peanuts, almonds.
ii. Vitamin A: helps to maintain Thymus gland which is a powerful antiviral gland : thus XXXXXXX carrots, cantaloupe, egg yolk, apricots, pumpkin, papaya, are ideal
iii. Vitamin C: is needed for proper functioning of immune system: amla is best
iv. Vitamin E: is a powerful anti oxidant which helps to stimulate antibody production: peanuts, dried apricots, cooked spinach, taro root can be taken
v. Vitamin B is important for the activity of phagocytes: eggs, cheese, pistachio, raw garlic, sunflower and sesame oil.
vi. Ashwagandha,Mandukparni,Shatavari,Trikatu,Vacha,Guduchi,are best Immunomdulators.

PS. going by the month i.e. ending of August and Beginning of September, it means there is ending of Pitta [ June-August] and beginning of Vata [September- December] whereas by XXXXXXX it is Vata -Kapha imbalance, so let me know according to which aspect the management should be imparted.

Thanks Dr Sood, that's good clarification and advice.

I live in Australia, middle east coast, temperate - sub tropical zone. Its just reaching the end of winter, approaching spring.

Does that mean the table below is reversed?

Brief Answer:
Constitutional characteristics & Seasonal regimen

Detailed Answer:
Dear

Thanks for reverting back with your clarifications.

A.

1. vata and kapha are almost totally opposite to one another in quality, i.e. while Kapha is concerned with energy conservation [potential energy], vata is related with energy release [ kinetic energy]

PS. Vata is related with motion, but excess motion can lead to over stimulation, [constipation/emphysema] likewise
Kapha promotes 'stasis' and excess stasis can lead to inertia [resistance]: gall stones and kidney stones.

2.
. Since your XXXXXXX is 'Vata- Kapha' [VKs] which means Pitta [lack of heat] usually manifests physically as digestive disturbances.
. VKs are usually zealous about what they do, so be especially wary of jumping to conclusions without proper investigation.

3. Since spring season is approaching i.e. 'Basant Ritu' from Ayurveda point of view, thus following guidelines are worth mentioning;

i. Since it is the beginning of summer which means 'Adana Kala' or decreasing of strength begins.
ii. In winter [Hemant Ritu] there is/was accumulation [sanchay] of Kapha resulting in increase of Kapha dosha, so as with increasing heat in spring, the collected Kapha in our body will start to spread [prasar] and causing vitiation [prakop] of Kapha dosha, thus will cause disorder of Kapha like: rhinitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, flu, allergic disorders,Anorexia,Dyspepsia
PS. Since main seat of Kapha dosha is Respiratory Tract.

iii. Diet: because there is Kapha dosha causing dyspepsia, thus take

. easily digestible food [rice, millet and roasted wheat products]
PS. eat grains which are stored in for a long time since new grains are heavy and difficult to digest and new grains naturally have high glycemic index which increases the blood sugar.

. Take Pungent/Bitter/Astringent [Katu,Tikta,Kshaya] like:
. Spices [asafoetida,black pepper,chilli,wet ginger,sweet flag
. fruit vegetables: ginger,bitter gourd,elephant fruit
. Cow milk, butter milk, honey, XXXXXXX juice, roasted meat, Medicated Wine [Assav/Arishta/Sidhu]

Avoid sweet/sour/salty [Madhur,Amal/Lavan] diet i.e. sweet and fatty diet
. butter, CURD, XXXXXXX milk, meat of watery animals.

BEHAVIOURAL

I. exercise should be done daily [but in moderation]
II. Sleeping at day time should be avoided
III. Dry Massage before bath is ideal

You may ask for Prescription Medicine like: Vyoshadi Vati, Lavangadi Vati, Sitopaladi Churna, Talishadi Churna, Shirishadi Kwath, Kantaryadi Awleha, Trikatu churna, Chitrakadi Vati, Ajmodadi Churna, Hingwashtak Churna, Lavanbhaskar Churna etc.

Thank you Dr Sood. Excellent concrete guidelines. I can confirm respiratory problems for some weeks now, bronchial and throat problems so this gives me confidence the science is accurate! I live in the inner city and I like it, but maybe need to get away more for fresh air.

When you say Adana Kala relates to decreasing strength, does this mean I become more imbalanced to kapha now than vata? Should I be pushing myself harder? I do weights and some cardio, low impact but generally around 3 hours per day. Should I work harder in that time to build strength, or should I work lighter to nurture decreasing strength. I find respiratory problems tend to make me feel tired, so do digestive.

One last thing, I do have difficulty sleeping, waking in the early hours and unable to sleep. Can you suggest anything?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Clarification & Guidelines

Detailed Answer:
Dear

Thanks for reverting back.

1. Spring season [mid march to mid may] is the beginning of summer [mid may to mid july] and in Ayurveda these season are related with Aadan Kala [northern solastice] i.e. decreasing of strength begins BUT also it is decreasing day by day till Visarga Kala [Southern Solastice] i.e. increase in strength will begin [from mid july to mid january], so in SPRING season

i. There is vitiation of Kapha dosha which decreases your AGNI [digestive fire] one should take/eat easily digestible food and at the same time since there is Adana Kala [natural loss of strength] one should do physical exercise in Moderation

ii. Sleeping at day time should be avoided because day time sleep increases Kapha dosha.

iii. You will be prone [imbalance] to Kapha disorders in Spring season because when SUMMER [Grishma Ritu] approaches then due to powerful sun rays Pitta will increase and pacification of Vata and Kapha dosha will be there, so you will be more prone towards hyperacidity vomiting, giddiness, fever, diarrhea [due to visciated pitta dosha] then again your Dietary Regimen will change.

iv. Sleep problem can be understood as:

i. due to SAD [seasonal affective disorder] developed during winter [Visarga kala] and decreases as the spring approaches.
PS. make sure that common secondary causes like depression, acid reflux, sleep apnea are ruled out for better management of the disease.

PREVENTIVE & PROPHYLACTIC ASPECT

1. avoid caffeine found in coffee, tea, chocolate, cola, and some pain relievers
PS. [four to six hours before bedtime.]

2. quiet, dark, and cool environment can help promote sound sleep.
PS. [Use heavy curtains, or an eye mask to block light, and also keeping computers, TVs, and other work materials out of the room will help promote mental bonding between your bedroom and sleep]

3. Avoid stressful, stimulating activities like doing work, discussing emotional issues.
PS. Physically and psychologically stressful activities can cause the body to secrete the stress hormone cortisol, which is associated with increasing alertness.

4. take dinner 2-3 hours before bedtime and avoid foods that cause indigestion. [spicy-heavy- junk food]

5. avoid afternoon napping to prevent late night awakening [ between 2-3 pm is ideal, but that too sitting on a chair while head resting on table]
PS.
i. Sitting up is the best sleeping position, because it provides the most alert sleep, sleeping on the right side is the most relaxing, on the left:most digestive, sleeping on your back is disturbing to Vata, and sleeping on your stomach is disturbing for everything.

ii. It is best to sleep with your head to east and feet to west which promotes meditative sleep.

6. looking at clock in your bedroom, [when you are trying to fall asleep] can actually increase stress, making it harder to fall asleep. Turn your clock’s face away from you.

7. take banana, black grapes, orange, spinach, ginger, tomatoes, take diet rich in vitamin C (Citrus fruits) and vitamin E (sunflower seeds, almonds, apricots, peanuts) which are rich in anti oxidants.

9. Lemon juice mixed with sugar in a glass of water helps release stress removing hormones from the body and bring mind at peace/rest.

10. Mix 4-5 dates in half glass of water and drink 2 times daily for a month.

11.
. eat 2 spoon coriander seeds with 2 spoons of sugar candy
. rub castor oil on palms and feet
. drink a juice of coriander leaves, water and sugar.
. before retiring to bed wash your mouth, head, back of neck, both ears and legs with cold water
. make a paste of 'bhang' with cow/goat milk and massage on feet.
. brahmi vati 2
sarphagandha ghan vati 2.... at bed time with milk

.ashwagandha arishta: 20 ml
sarasvta arishta: 20 ml [after meals with equal amount of water]

. put a black dot on the distal phalynx of middle and ring fingers of both sides ( the black dot can be marked by any marker and should be exactly in the mid line of the fingers. They are to be applied at night on both sides- works in 80% cases).
