Brief Answer:
Exclusive breast feeding is recommended for children below 6 months of age.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. However you have missed out mentioning how many months its age is going to be. Let me emphasize on the fact that breast milk is the best possible milk for a baby upto 6 months of age and there can be no alternatives for the same. So, if the age is less than 5 months all I would insist on is exclusive breast feeding. No other foods or liquids are to be given.

If the child is going to be 6 months or more, you can start with thick liquids like dal water or fruit juices, gradually move over to semi-solids or mashed foods, and subsequently start with pounded food. Consider your ABCs - applesauce, bananas, and cereal (rice, biscuits dipped in milk, or roti softened with milk/water). Boiled rice and dal with vegetables and give in mashed form. Gradually increase the amount and frequency. Introduce one new food item per week and stick to it at least for the week.

Let me know if I could help further.
