default
Posted on Tue, 13 Dec 2016
Question: I am on second round of Flagyl for CDiff & doc told me to keep food log. Told me to stay away from dairy, caffeine, fresh fruits/ vegs. / sugar & sweeteners, carbs! What can I eat in addition to chicken, fish, lower fat beef? Appetite while on Flagyl isn't the best either.
Thank you for getting back to me!

Brief Answer:
avoid fiber, fat and dairy products

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

first of all let me emphasize the fact that diet during such infections cannot alter their natural course. If you don't eat as instructed you're going to get more bowel movements but that's all there is to it. No harm can be done...

The usual advice for patients like you includes what your doctor has described. You should avoid fiber (fruits, vegetables, etc), fat (avoid cheese, pies, visible fat on a steak, skin, etc) and dairy products (milk mostly).

You can eat everything else. Or you can eat the "forbidden" food but expect more bowel movements in that case.
For example you can eat rice with chicken but remember to remove the skin. Or you can eat a pork steak (after removing the fat). Rice, potatoes, spaghetti (no sauce, no cheese) are OK to use.

Let me add one more comment. Perhaps you should discuss about vancomycin with your doctor. This works better with C.difficile intestinal infections and is the 1st choice regimen for relapses.

I hope you find my comments helpful!

Kind Regards!
