Brief Answer:
It is sometimes prescribed for years.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Dicorate ER is primarily a medicine for epilepsy; though it has other uses too. It is most often used for long time and yes they are sometimes used for more than 2 years.

And yes on the long term it does affect the liver. However a doctor has to judge the benefits of using it over the disadvantage of liver effects. Moreover there are many patients who have been on this pill without apparent liver damages. Furthermore if needed liver enzymes may be tested periodically to know if its effects on liver and treatment can be adjusted.

In other words, as long as the patient follows instruction of treating doctor, we need not be overly worried about liver problems.

Hope this answers your question. let me know if you have any other specific questions.
