Question: Does pedicalm syrup should give daily to a baby. My baby is of 7 weeks, he is having gases problem. I am giving him colicaid, emrald and kalikare daily for 2, 3 times. These medicines are related to a colic baby... How would I get to know, whether he has colic or not.... Or it has any other solution to make him calm...
How to make him asleep at night... He is sleeping in day time... Please answer my query...

Brief Answer:
If the child cries incessantly, you can assume it to be due to colic.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the mentioned problems. Let me address them one by one.
* Let me emphasize on the fact that breast milk is the best possible feed for a baby. I would strongly recommend that if you are not sticking to breast milk, please try to switch back to breast feeding. That should automatically take care of the gas issue as well as the colics.
* Be sure to burp the child after each feed. Hold the child erect for about 20 mins after each feed. That will reduce the occurrence of colics as well.
* A child of this age can pass stool 10 times a day or once in 10 days and both are equally normal.
* If the child is crying incessantly without any valid explanations, chances are that the child is having abdominal colic which may occur due to over-distension of the stomach. It is only then that medicines like Colicaid or Pedicalm. You do not need to give them on regular basis. If things are fine, there is no reason to presume that the child has abdominal colics and you need not give medicines unnecessarily for that.
* At any point if you need to calm the baby, Pedicalm can be given.
* I am not sure of the contents of Kalikare and Emrald but doubt whether they are needed.
* The sleeping habits of a child are likely to be different from that of adults. It can be normal if the child sleeps 20 hours a day and even when the child seems not to sleep at all. Nothing needs to be done about this. I would not suggest any medication to help the child sleep at night instead of during the day.

Hope that helps.
