Suggest Effective Alternative Of Seroquel For Sleeplessness

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: I am taking 300 mg seroquel, 10mg ambien, 1 mg clonozopam, 900 mg lithium each day. My main problem was sleeping. And it was a serious problem. I sleep good most nights now but I want to find a substitute for the seroquel that doesn't cause the weight gain. I have tried reducing the dosage hoping I could get off of it but reducing to seroquel to 150mg had me waking up 20 times in 6 hours of fitfull sleep.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your question and understand your concern.
You are taking quitiapine, zolpidem and clonazepam- all of them have some sedative properties. If you are having a good sleep with these medicines, its better not to change any drug.
Yes seroquel is associated with increased appetite and subsequent weight gain. Many patients on seroquel come to me with complaints of weight gain but most of them are doing well with simple measures like eating less amount, eating fresh fruits, more dietary fibers and whole grain food, less junk food and oily food, less processed food. Alongwith, brisk walking for 1hour a day, cycling or swimming is very helpful.
I would suggest you the above for 3 months and if still your problem persists, you can consult your doctor for probable change of dose or medicine.

Hope this was helpful.
Regards.
