Brief Answer:
Following diet/lifestyle changes and medications....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

IBS is called irritable bowel syndrome. It happens when your bowel overact to various stimuli.

The main goal in managing IBS is to eliminate those factors that would precipitate or aggravate the symptoms.

So, you must:
- eat more fiber rich foods
- do more physical activities
- avoid oily, spicy, chilly foods
- avoid alcohol/smoking or carbonated drinks
- drink more fluids

2. With regards to medications, they include:
- probiotics to normalize intestinal flora
- antispasmodics (buscopan, spasmodil, etc.)

I understand that this is an annoying disease, however, if you follow changes in your diet and lifestyle regimen, you can prevent flare ups.

Hope it was of help!

thank you for your help. I already use probiotics but have not heard of antispasmodics. what do they do and is there more value in taking them. I pretty much already follow what I should be doing. would try antispasmodics if they would lessen flare which last for day or little more. sort of keeps me housebound. thanks for your additional help. also does my age have any bearing on this.

Brief Answer:
Age matters, might need prescription

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Antispasmodics are drugs used to relieve pain coming from abdominal organs.

They include buscopan, papaverin etc. You might need prescription.

Age can also aggravate the symptoms of IBS.

All the best!
