Suggest Ideal Baby Food For A 21 Week Old Baby

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jun 2016
Question: Hi my kid is in his 16th week and will soon finish his 20th week. I am planning to introduce solids in his 21st week as my paediatrician has advised here. He is super gassy and I am so scared as what should be introduced. Cerelac or nestum? If nestum, should this be mixed with breast milk or nan pro? Or just water to nestum. He should start with rice wheat or baby oatmeal. Or shall I start with boiled apples? He currently has nan pro and breastfed simultaneously.

Brief Answer:
Exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months is recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to this forum.
Can understand your concerns.

Till 6 month's of age only exclusive breastfeeding is advised.

Nestum is given in breast milk or formula milk like Nan pro while ceralac can be given in water or milk.

After completion of 6 months, nestum can be introduced, initially one scoop should be given which is increased as child grows.

Nestum will be a better choice than ceralac based on available data.

Rice wheat or oatmeal should be started at a later stage around 6 and half months of age because baby intestines are not mature enough to digest it.

Boiled apples should be given after 7 month of age.

I hope this helps .
Wishing your child good health .
Take care .

Nestum rice or wheat? Is my question. What else home food can be given? Nestum rice mixed with breastmilk or nan pro? Which would be better on gassy babies? What veggies can be introduced?

Brief Answer:
Nestum rice in breast milk will be better

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
welcome once again.

As i have already told you that nestum can be given in breast milk or nan pro 1, both will be equally good. For gassy baby, it should be given in breast milk, Try nestum in breast milk first, if quantity is not much then nan pro 1 should be used.

Nestum rice is used more frequently then wheat.

As i have already said that till 6 months only breast milk is advised and only after 6 months semisolid foods are introduced. I suggest you to wait till 6 months is completed. You can check NNF guidelines if you have any doubt.

You should wait for atleast 7 months to start any veggies. I think that its too early for the baby to start any veggies.

I hope this will help you.
Take care.

thanks doctor, I will start with Nestum rice mixed with breastmilk. Yes I express around 200 ml every day. So how many times should I give in a day in the beginning and then how do i increase the frequency and how many times? I will start his solids as he starts his 6th month.

As

My daughter started cerelac (rice and wheat) in her 4th month itself 6 years back and she did really well.

till how many days this gas prevails? its been 4 months of sleepless nights. he wakes every 30 - 45 mins and stretches. He is on decolic drops since he was 3 weeks. Plus I also use US based Little remedies gas drops as well twice or thrice a day.

Brief Answer:
Start with one scoop initially

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It is seen that some babies can take only one scoop while some takes up to 4 scoops of nestum. But, I suggest you to start with 1 scoop initially and if child takes it comfortably then increase scoop amount.

Don't give decolic drops too much because if you give more than body becomes dependent on it and then you have to give it Everytime. Try to give it only when it's required.

Give only one drug for a problem because additional drug will not help. I suggest you to give only decolic drops and that too when necessary.

Take care.

Brief Answer:
Gas problem persists till 6 months of age

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You should start Nestum one scoop once a day, wait for 1 week if child takes fully and comfortably then increase it to 2 scoop per day.

Gas problem usually persists till 6 months of age in most children.

I think the reason for giving gas drops is that you are giving it very regularly. In my opinion, you should only give Decolic drops when required. In this way, the need for drops can be reduced.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask me.

Take care.

Thanks doctor. Should it ideally replace one of his milk bottle meal? Like he has a full bottle at 2 pm and 10 pm? Should I replace that with nestum meal?

Yes he has gas drops from 3 week. As he doesn't sleep even for 15 minutes. Just stretches and wakes up. It's been extremely painful till date.

Brief Answer:
Give nestum at 2 pm

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You should give nestum one scoop at 2 pm, followed by remaining quantity of formula milk. Give milk at 10 pm.

If child is able to take fully then increase it to two scoops gradually after 1 week.

The problem of pain abdomen decreases as baby grows in age. Usually, it doesn't occur after 7 months of age .

Give pain abdomen drops only when required and not more than 3 times a day .

Take care .

Brief Answer:
Diet chart is as follows

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

From 6 months onwards:
Initial 7 days: give glucose biscuit in milk and bread pieces in milk
After 7 days: introduce ceralac, mashed banana, continue above items.
After 15 days: continue above food, add oats, dal
After 7 months of age: give boiled mashed Apple, continue oats, dal, ceralac. Rice can be given.

Food should have very low salt and no chill powder.

If child doesn't take food then also you should keep trying as it takes some time for the child to develop taste.

Take care.

Thanks doctor. Glucose biscuits in the sense you mean parle g or milk bikis biscuits. But they are hard ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Deepak Patel (9 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Glucose biscuit is recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Glucose biscuit like parle g or tiger glucose biscuit are good and the purpose of giving these initially is that child should digest it without any difficulty.

Milk bikis are not recommended initially, you can give them once child is 8 months old.

Child's intestine is very delicate and it's very important to start slowly so that problems like pain abdomen doesn't occur.

Take care.

Thanks again. Can I also make home made rice cereal? Should it be better then cerelac or nestum?
One more question., my baby still doesn't turn over on his tummy and he is very reluctant for that.
He also doesn't like tummy time at all. He lifts his head though.
So when does a baby normally turn on his tummy and pushes his leg to go forward? My daughter did it in 3 months. So I was worried.

Brief Answer:
Nestum will be a better choice

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Homemade rice cereal should be introduced after 6 months of age.

Nestum will be a better choice than other two.

Normally, a baby turns around completion of 5 month's of age. Some children may do it earlier and it may be delayed in some. But, we have to compare with the normal charts.

Every child is unique and should not be compared with other children but with the normal charts according to age.

Take care.
