Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation is the best medicine for her.Cause needs evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone through the details and understand your concerns. You should get the cause of the ongoing dry cough evaluated. It could be that your wife has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or some similar ailment which requires to be managed.
You have not done the right thing by giving codeine. It is a cough suppressant. The cough is non-productive and codeine is making it even more non-productive and is thus worsening the situation. Rather, some mucolytic needs to be given. Ascoril-C is a mucolytic but its effects are getting undone by codeine. These two medicines act in opposite directions.
But rather than giving Ascoril-C, I would stand in favour of steam inhalation. Water in the form of steam, can reach deep inside and helps in diluting the cough and providing relief. I would suggest steam inhalation on regular basis and a few times a day. Alongside, you can continue Ascoril-C but the others are simply not necessary.
Hope that helps.

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation would suffice.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Steam inhalation without any other medication should be enough to provide her relief. You may try giving her cetirizine tablet once daily for a few days but not further. I do not think that any other medication is required.

Respected Prof Saha jee,
Namaskar. I have not informed you regarding the other health problems of my wife. She is having Thyroid problems for the last 20 years. She was taking Thyrox-100 for 5-6 years. Then it was reduced to Thyrox-75.Now she is taking Thyrox-50 & Thyrox-75 alternatively. She is also suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia from 2011.She was taken to XXXXXXX New XXXXXXX for Operation. But H O D of Neurological Science advised not go for operation in the early stage. She was given an Injection on her fore-head. She was cured for 2-3 months. But pain in the fore-head again started. Then the doctor advised take another Injection or to take the medicine OXITOL-300 regularly. As there was some problems in our family, it was not possible to move to New XXXXXXX She is taking the medicine ( OXITOL-300 ) regularly. If the medicine is discontinued for 2-3 days, then the pain is beeing started.
So she is regularly taking the above two medicines ( Thyrox & Oxitol )for the last three years. When she happened to suffer from Dry-Cough Grillinctus-CD was given. She could not get any relief by other medicines except Codistar, Corex, Ascoril-C, Phensedyle & Grillinctus-CD.
Now the above cough Syrups are not available in the market. These medicines have been banned . I was not aware of the fact that these are harmful for health.
I am in doubt that the dry cough started due to regular intake of Thyrox & Oxitol. Is it so ?
Any way, let us think for the present. What to do ? Can she be cured by steam inhalation only ? She will take cetrizine for a few days ( 10-15 days ). In how many days she will be recovered/ cured by taking steam inhalation ? She has started inhaling steam from yester-day.How many times she will have to inhale steam in a day ? Kindly advise me. Can she be recovered fully ?
Yours,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation a few times a day would give her reasonable relief.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking back. I have gone carefully through the details provided. She needs to continue Thyrox and Oxitol as prescribed. Although certain cough syrups might not be available, I think that plain Ascoril or plain Grillinctus should be available. You can give any of these two. You can also give Ascoril LS which should be available. It contains antiallergic and if you give Ascoril LS, you need not give cetirizine separately. In any case it is no use giving it for more than 5-6 days.

I think the best output will come from steam inhalation. Taking steam inhalation for three or four times a day should be good but there is no hard and fast rule. The response would depend on her lung condition which can be assessed only after clinical examination. But I can assure you that she would be reasonably relieved.
