Question : What kind of medication could be helpful for someone on continuous tube feeding (Jevity 1.2) with colitis and chronic diarrhea issues?

                                    Brief Answer:
Please give some details so I can answer this question.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
Does this person have gastrostopy or jejunostomy? What is the reason this person has to have it? How do you know its colitis? Was there colonoscopy done? What are the symptoms (blood in stool, mucus in stool, fever)? Does the diarrhea started after feeding formula was given?
I`m looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards.

PEG tube inserted at hospital (approximately 2 months ago) after dysphagia secondary to CVA. Long history of colitis prior to CVA and TF. Chronic diarrhea issues since TF started despite many formula changes: have tried Osmolite, Glucernia, Promote, and currently on Jevity 1.2. Will next try Vital elemental formula. Allergic to eggs, milk and pork. Unknown if colonoscopy was completed recently, but family resistant to having one completed at this time because of poor cognition. No fever. No noticeable blood or mucus in stool. Negative for Cdiff. Weight stable. Most labs WNL. Skin at risk for ulcers because bedbound and chronic diarrhea, but currently has good protein status. MD started Questran BID to help control diarrhea, but no improvements noted at this time. What other medications can be used to treat colitis?
The actually diagnosis is collagenous colitis.

                                    Brief Answer:
Anti inflammatory medicines should be started.
Detailed Answer:
Diarrhea is caused by nutrition formula. It is very common. No matter which formula will be tried. Mixing regular foods or giving soups can be tried instead of all known formulas. Or at least half of formula dosage along with regular food.
Colitis needs antiinflammatory treatment. This condition is caused by immune system reaction to host intestinal cells. In simple words there is constant inflammation in intestines. To limit this inflammation medicines like steroids,Azathioprine should be tried.
Diarrhea can be also controlled with Loperamide.
Hope this will help.
Regards.
