Question: I have just finished a prescription of a Z pack for an ear infection. I am allergic to penicillin. My ears are still very painful. I don't think the Z pack was effective. Which antibiotic would you recommend as an alternative

Brief Answer:
Clarithromycin or Bactrim!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I will suggest that you see your doctor for evaluation to understand why the treatment failed. Z-pack is a good second line treatment for penicillin allergic patients. YOu may need to have a culture of the ear specimen to identify the exact germing responsible for your symptoms and treat accordingly.

Other alternative medications include Bactrim and Clarithromycin. Discuss these options with your doctor for consideration.

I wish you well. Keep me updated on how this unfolds.
